Verizon's LG Revolution

Share |
Verizon's LG Revolution - Verizon (like most operators) has thus far been coy about its plans for rolling out voice calling services on its LTE network, in part because voice isn't a core service of LTE -- everything is simply treated as data, which means carriers have needed to mull their options and decide how (and when) to add voice into the mix. We'd gotten the vague impression from Verizon's LTE launch event late last year that 4G voice wasn't in the company's 2011 plans, but it turns out that's not true: they've now come out to say that the LG Revolution -- announced at CES last month -- will be Verizon's first VoLTE device when it launches mid-year. Naturally, it'll fall back to CDMA voice when you're out of LTE range, but the move will represent the carrier's first baby step into the 4G voice realm; it'll offer higher sound quality than you're used to with traditional cellular and landline calls (akin to HD Voice, we imagine) which will be one of its selling points when it launches. Every indication is that this will be a glacially slow transition -- it'll take years for handsets to support the standard on a wide scale and LTE footprints to expand nationally, never mind inter-carrier call compatibility -- but it's a big move nonetheless. Look for more news on this at MWC next week.

iPhone 4 Works on Verizon

Share |
iPhone 4 Works on Verizon - The day of destiny is nearly upon us: on February 10th, you'll finally be able to get an iPhone that works on Verizon. For us in the tech media, that's one blown-out, seemingly never-ending rumor that we never have to write about again -- whew! -- but for you, this could very well mark the beginning of a magical journey. Of course, there are many, many things to consider that'll influence your decision to buy: what carrier are you on currently? Do you already have an iPhone? How much traveling do you do? Are you a vegetarian? The list goes on and on -- and we intend to help you figure it all out in time for launch day. What's more, we'll take a look at some of your best alternatives, too, because let's be honest: just because the Verizon iPhone is here doesn't mean that it's right for everyone. So without further ado, let's dive in and get this figured out.

Barnes & Noble phasing out the Nook 3G

Share |
Barnes & Noble phasing out the Nook 3G - Barnes & Noble may be selling millions of Nook products, but it's sounding like the 3G variant hasn't really done its part to help those figures. We've received hard evidence from within B&N that the Nook is being discontinued, with sales to seemingly continue until stock is exhausted. The outfit is encouraging retail partners to not send out any bulk orders for the Nook 3G, as there simply won't be sufficient quantities to fulfill those orders. Of course, we're told that the company never actually received a huge amount of Nook 3G bulk orders to begin with, so maybe WiFi really is everywhere these days. At any rate, grab yourself a Nook 3G post-haste if you've been thinking it over -- once they're gone, they're gone for good. Or, you could wait for a next-gen version with a Pearl display. Just sayin'.

Update: We received clarification that the discontinuation isn't due to the lack of bulk sales, they're just the first casualty of a dwindling supply.

Verizon Outage Wireless 3G - Verizon is gearing up to release the new Apple iPhone 4 (CDMA) and it makes us wonder whether they can handle the customer base that will be joining them to get its hands on the smartphone, we know that there will be millions of new Verizon iPhone subscribers including AT&T customers.

Do you think there will be many outages once Verizon release the iPhone 4?

Verizon Wireless seems to be having 3G network outage problems in a few parts of the US, with one of the main areas being Virginia, North Carolina.

Apparently according to Erictric the 3G network is down that is affecting both voice and input services around the Northeast part of United States, Verizon Wireless knows of the issues they are facing and looking into the problem.

Why iPhone's is plastic back?

Share |

Why iPhone's is plastic back? - The plastic back is the most obvious of the design choices. The iPad, with its all aluminum back, has seen its Wi-Fi reception radius reduced. The 3G version comes with a large patch on the top, probably big enough to provide with good reception. But the new tiny iPhone doesn't have the luxury of space: It needs to provide as much signal as possible using a very small surface. I'm sure Jon Ive is dying to get rid of the plastic back, and go iPad-style all the way, but the wireless reception is the most important thing in a cellphone. A necessary aesthetical-functional trade-off.
